How to Get Started

From "What is this?" to "Battle in progress" in under 10 minutes.

Step 1: Get Your Free Trial

Click "Start Your Saga" and complete checkout for the free trial. This gives you access to The Saga Forge campaign system.

Step 2: Download the Tabletop Rules

After checkout, download the free Saga Forge rulebook. This is what you'll use to resolve battles on your table. Print it or keep it on your phone/tablet.

Step 3: Create Your Jarl

You will get an email with a link. Follow the link. Answer questions about your Viking leader. Who are they? How'd they become Jarl? What is their village called? Who are their closest companions?

Takes 5 minutes.

Step 4: System Generates Your Force

The system uses your answers to generate your Jarl, two companions, and a warband for each of them. You will learn about your companions and be given a choice. This is your force for the campaign and sets the tone. This will trigger the generation of your first scenario.

Step 5: Access Your Campaign Dashboard

Click the "Your Saga Forge Dashboard" link on the website. This takes you to your personal campaign dashboard where you'll find your scenarios and submit battle results. *Scenario generation can take a few minutes, so be patient and it will show up in your dashboard.

Step 6: Get Your First Scenario

Your dashboard shows your first battle. You'll see:

  • Enemy force composition with behavior profiles (Aggressive, Defensive, Hunter, etc.)
  • Victory conditions
  • Setup instructions
  • Any special rules or stakes
  • Table setup and starting positions

Print it. That's your mission brief.

Step 7: Fight the Battle

Set up your table with your miniatures and terrain. Use the D10 rulebook to resolve combat.

Enemy units follow their behavior profiles - you use flowcharts to determine what they do. You don't make decisions for them, you discover their actions. They feel intelligent because they're following coherent strategies.

Battles run 30-60 minutes.

Step 8: Report Results

Battle's over. Go back to your dashboard and submit results:

  • Which characters fell (dead, wounded, or just scratched)?
  • How many kills did each character get?
  • Any narrative details you want the system to remember

Takes 2 minutes.

Step 9: Get Your Next Scenario

The system generates your next battle based on what just happened. That enemy settlement remembers you raided them. Your wounded companion is recovering. Your warband's reputation is spreading. Consequences ripple forward.

Repeat steps 7-9. That's the campaign.

Things You Can Do:

Don't have time to set up terrain? Skip the battle. Fill out results as if you'd played it. Move to the next scenario. The campaign keeps going.

Scenario doesn't grab you? Skip it. Fill out results as if you had played, same as above. The system adjusts.

Buddies drop by? Hand them the OPFOR or let them command one of your companions' warbands.

Want to play co-op? Each player controls one of the three characters and their warband.

Want to play versus? One player takes the OPFOR, ignores the flowcharts, plays the enemy tactically based on teh motivations and objectives generated in the scenario.

Got 30 minutes? Fight one battle. Got three hours? Fight five scenarios and start a blood feud.

What You Need:

  • 28mm Viking miniatures (or any dark age miniatures - doesn't matter) around 40 for both sides to start
  • Battle mat or table 3ft x 3ft
  • Terrain (optional but recommended)
  • Standard gaming dice
  • 60-90 minutes per battle

What the System Tracks:

  • Your three main characters' status (wounds, experience, kills)
  • Your warbands' evolution based on performance
  • Your Jarl's renown
  • World heat meter (how much attention you're drawing from bigger threats)
  • Every narrative detail you feed it
